a resource for urban planners & designers

The website has been developed as a resource for Urban Planners and Designers interested in creating culturally relevant built environment outcomes for our culturally diverse communities.
The premise of the “Planning Culturally” concept is that culture influences everything that we as humans do in terms of our values, beliefs, and behaviours. Therefore, creating culturally relevant built environments is important in our culturally diverse cities. To achieve this outcome, we need planning and design professionals who are culturally literate and have the skills and awareness to plan and design culturally!

The site is structured around three key themes:
Urban Cultures: considering cities, people & their cultures.
Urban Places: considering the relationship between culture & the built environment.
Urban Practices: considering the practice of Planning & Designing Culturally.
Each of the above themes has an introduction to four sub sections and attached to each is a PDF of a detailed Discussion Paper available for free download on the Resources page.

The final section of the site includes a range of Links to relevant articles, publications and websites for those interested in further research on the subject of Planning & Designing Culturally.
